Gold and Silver Rate today witnessed a dramatic decline on Friday, erasing a large portion of their recent gains and unsettling investors seeking safe-haven assets. On the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX), gold futures fell by ₹4,347 per 10 grams, while silver tumbled by ₹10,577 per kilogram.
At the close of trading, MCX gold futures settled at ₹1,38,419 per 10 grams, while silver ended at ₹1,78,900 per kg. The sharp downturn pushed gold to its lowest level since March and placed silver on course for one of its steepest monthly losses of the year.
What Triggered the Sell-Off?
Several factors combined to pressure precious metal prices:
1. Hawkish Federal Reserve Signals
A major reason behind the decline was the US Federal Reserve’s firm stance on interest rates. Markets increasingly expect the Fed to keep rates elevated for longer to combat inflation. Higher interest rates typically reduce the appeal of gold and silver since these assets do not generate regular income.
2. Rising Oil Prices and Inflation Concerns
Increasing energy costs have renewed fears of persistent inflation. As a result, investors now believe the Fed could maintain tight monetary policies for an extended period, creating additional pressure on precious metals.
3. Sharp Decline in Global Spot Prices
International markets mirrored the weakness. Spot gold plunged nearly 4% to around $3,875 per ounce, marking its lowest level in more than a year. Spot silver also dropped roughly 6% to about $49 per ounce, reflecting widespread selling across global markets.
4. Stock Market Volatility
The recent AI-driven sell-off in equity markets may have forced some investors to liquidate holdings in gold and silver to raise cash and cover losses elsewhere. This wave of selling intensified the downward momentum.
5. Weakness in China
Reports suggest some investors in China sold gold holdings to boost liquidity. Although unconfirmed, such activity may have added to the selling pressure in global precious metals markets.

Can Gold and Silver Recover?
Despite the sharp correction, analysts believe there are factors that could support prices in the coming months. India’s festive and wedding season generally boosts demand for gold jewelry, coins, and bars, providing a potential cushion for domestic prices.
Additionally, continued purchases by central banks worldwide remain a supportive factor for gold. Silver may also benefit from long-term demand linked to industries such as solar energy, electronics, and advanced manufacturing.
How Far Have Prices Fallen?
Silver has lost more than half of its value from the record high reached in January, following a spectacular rally in the previous year. Gold has also retreated significantly, dropping over ₹42,000 per 10 grams from its peak level.
While gold is traditionally viewed as a hedge against inflation and economic uncertainty, higher interest rates often shift investor attention toward assets that offer better returns, reducing demand for precious metals in the short term.
