Balasubramanian S, an experienced media and digital business leader, has announced that he will leave Dinamalar at the end of October 2026. His departure marks the end of a 16-year association with the organisation and a career spanning nearly three decades across media, advertising, digital publishing and business transformation.
Since joining Dinamalar in 2010, Balasubramanian has played an important role in developing and expanding its digital business. He has worked across digital strategy, revenue generation, audience growth, advertising technology, content development and strategic partnerships.
As he prepares to leave, he is looking for a broader leadership role across media, digital businesses and emerging platforms. However, he has not yet disclosed his next professional assignment.
In a LinkedIn post, Balasubramanian announced his decision, stating that he had decided to move on from Dinamalar after more than 16 years.
He also reflected on how the digital publishing industry has changed since he joined the organisation. At the time, regional publishers had established strong readerships, but digital revenue models and online monetisation strategies were still developing.
Over the years, his responsibilities expanded beyond digital publishing to include business strategy, revenue growth, audience development, advertising, technology and organisational transformation.
From Print Advertising to Digital Business Leadership
Balasubramanian began his media career in 1997 with Dinakaran Newspaper, where he worked for more than eight years after starting as a Marketing Executive.
In October 2005, he moved to Galatta, taking on the role of Senior Vice President – Ad Sales at Galatta.com and Galatta Cinema magazine. He continued in that position until December 2009 before joining Dinamalar in 2010.
At Dinamalar, he helped build and manage the digital business during a period of significant change in the publishing industry. Traditional print-focused business models increasingly gave way to digital audiences, online advertising, programmatic platforms and data-driven monetisation.
His professional experience covers several areas, including:
-
Digital business strategy and revenue growth
-
Audience development and content strategy
-
Digital advertising and advertising technology (AdTech)
-
Product and platform development
-
Technology integration and strategic partnerships
-
Digital monetisation and business transformation
Throughout his career, Balasubramanian has focused on connecting content, technology, audiences and commercial opportunities to build sustainable digital businesses.
Focus on AI and Emerging Digital Platforms
Looking ahead, Balasubramanian intends to pursue opportunities that combine business leadership, technology and digital transformation.
Artificial intelligence, Generative AI and Agentic AI are among his current areas of interest. He sees potential applications for these technologies in business operations, digital products, content development, audience engagement and organisational decision-making.
He is also pursuing MIT Professional Education’s Applied Agentic AI for Organizational Transformation programme.
Balasubramanian has expressed interest in a broader business leadership role where he can apply his experience in revenue growth, audience development and transformation across media and emerging digital platforms.
His departure comes at a time when publishers are reassessing their digital strategies. First-party data, programmatic advertising, connected TV, AI-powered content and audience engagement are becoming important areas of focus for media organisations.
These developments also align with his professional interests as he prepares for the next stage of his career.
Leadership at Advertising Club Madras
Alongside his corporate responsibilities, Balasubramanian has contributed to the advertising and media industry through the Advertising Club Madras.
He served as the Club’s President from 2023 to 2025 and continues to be associated with it as an Ex-Officio Committee Member.
During his presidency, the Club organised more than 50 programmes, workshops, networking events and knowledge-sharing initiatives. These activities brought together advertising agencies, media companies, marketers, corporate leaders, educational institutions and other industry participants.
He also oversaw the MADDYS Awards in 2024 and 2025.
The 2024 edition received 1,015 entries, marking the highest participation in the awards’ 42-year history. The 2025 edition followed with 929 entries.
Other initiatives during his tenure included efforts to revive and expand the Student Chapter programme across colleges, strengthen governance through specialised subcommittees and improve collaboration between industry professionals and academic institutions.
The Club also generated more than ₹25 lakh in revenue and recorded a profitable operating year during his tenure.
Reflecting on this experience, Balasubramanian acknowledged the contributions of the Advertising Club Madras Executive Committee, its former leaders and its wider membership.
Balancing Corporate Leadership With Competitive Athletics
Beyond his professional life, Balasubramanian has developed a parallel interest in competitive athletics. He began participating in Masters Athletics in 2019 while continuing his corporate career.
He has represented Tamil Nadu and India in Masters Athletics and qualified for the 200-metre final at the Asian Masters Athletics Championship 2025.
His recent achievements include a gold medal in the 200 metres and a bronze medal in the 100 metres at the Chennai Masters Athletics Meet 2025. He has also earned relay medals at national-level Masters competitions and competed in javelin throw events.
His reported personal bests include 13.10 seconds in the 100 metres, 26.30 seconds in the 200 metres and a javelin throw of 31.78 metres in 2026.
Balasubramanian has drawn comparisons between competitive athletics and professional leadership, highlighting discipline, resilience, continuous improvement and performance optimisation as principles that apply to both fields.
What Comes Next for Balasubramanian S?
After more than 16 years at Dinamalar, Balasubramanian is preparing to explore new opportunities across media, digital business, emerging platforms and technology-led transformation.
His experience spans traditional newspaper advertising, digital publishing, business development, industry leadership and competitive sport. This combination could support his ambitions for a broader leadership position.
Although he has not announced his next assignment, his stated interests suggest a continued focus on building digital businesses, developing new revenue opportunities and applying emerging technologies to business challenges.
As he concludes this chapter, Balasubramanian has expressed gratitude to the colleagues and industry professionals who contributed to his journey and invited peers to reconnect as he considers the next phase of his career.
