BSE Q2 Profit Rises 45% as Derivatives Trading Rebounds StronglyIndia’s BSE posted a robust second-quarter performance, with profit up 45% year on year and a strong rebound in its derivatives business. The recovery follows a temporary slowdown caused by changes to market trading rules earlier this year.

BSE Sees Strong Revival in Derivatives Segment

The exchange operator indicated that derivatives trading volumes have recovered significantly following disruptions linked to the introduction of the Closing Auction Session (CAS). The mechanism, implemented to align Indian markets with global standards, initially affected trading activity by increasing end-of-day market volatility.

According to BSE management, traders became cautious after the regulatory changes, leading to reduced participation in derivatives. However, market activity has since improved, with September showing a notable recovery and October delivering record-breaking performance.

Record October for Index Options Trading

BSE achieved its highest-ever monthly average daily turnover in index options premium volumes during October. This milestone highlights growing investor participation and renewed confidence in the derivatives market.

Although average daily derivatives turnover increased 50% compared to the same period last year, it declined sequentially from the previous quarter due to the temporary impact of the auction-related changes.

Profit Rises 45% Year-on-Year

For the quarter ended September 30, BSE reported a consolidated net profit of ₹809 crore, compared with ₹558 crore a year earlier. The strong earnings growth reflects the exchange’s expanding presence in India’s fast-growing derivatives market.

The company has benefited from a larger market share in equity derivatives, the introduction of new index-based products, and increased participation from brokers and foreign investors.

Revenue and Profit Dip Sequentially

Despite solid annual growth, BSE’s quarterly profit and revenue declined compared with the preceding quarter. Profit slipped around 7%, while revenue fell approximately 8%.

However, these declines were lower than those reported by rival National Stock Exchange (NSE), suggesting that BSE weathered the market disruption relatively well.

What’s Driving BSE’s Growth?

Several factors have supported BSE’s recent expansion:

  • Rising participation in equity derivatives trading
  • Introduction of new index derivative contracts
  • Growing interest from institutional and foreign investors
  • Recovery in trading activity after regulatory adjustments
  • Increased market share in India’s derivatives segment

These trends have helped strengthen the exchange’s competitive position in a rapidly evolving market environment.

Conclusion

BSE delivered a strong second-quarter performance, supported by higher profitability and a sharp recovery in derivatives trading. While regulatory changes temporarily slowed market activity, the exchange has successfully regained momentum, culminating in record index options turnover during October. The 45% rise in profit underscores BSE’s growing influence in India’s derivatives ecosystem and reflects increasing participation from both domestic and international investors. Going forward, sustained growth in derivatives trading, product innovation, and improving market volumes could further strengthen BSE’s position against larger rivals. The latest results suggest that the exchange is well-positioned to capitalize on the continued expansion of India’s capital markets.
