CPCL was among the top gainers, with the stock jumping 13.15% to an intraday high of Rs 1,591.MRPL Share Price also attracted buying interest, rising 5.56% to Rs 184.30. Other energy stocks, including Antelopus Selan Energy Ltd and Hindustan Oil Exploration Company Ltd (HOEC), were trading up by as much as 4% during afternoon trading.
Why Are CPCL and MRPL Shares Rising?
The latest gains came as crude oil prices moved higher amid concerns about possible disruptions to global supplies. Investors are closely watching developments in major oil-producing regions as geopolitical tensions and weather-related risks could affect production and transportation.
Earlier, Choice Institutional Equities had noted that higher crude prices could remain a challenge for oil marketing companies (OMCs), while refiners such as CPCL and MRPL could potentially benefit under certain market conditions.
The brokerage had previously assigned a target price of Rs 215 for MRPL and Rs 1,540 for CPCL.
However, investors should note that brokerage targets are estimates and are not guaranteed returns. Actual stock performance can vary depending on crude prices, refining margins, company earnings and broader market conditions.
Healthy Refining Margins Could Support Refiners
Kranthi Bathini, Director of Equity Strategy at WealthMills Securities, said that a sustained increase in international crude prices, combined with healthy gross refining margins (GRMs), could support refinery companies such as CPCL and MRPL.
GRM is broadly the difference between the value of refined petroleum products produced by a refinery and the cost of crude oil used as the raw material. It is an important indicator for assessing refinery profitability.
When refining margins remain strong, refiners can potentially benefit from better profitability. However, margins can change quickly depending on crude prices, product demand, inventories and global supply conditions.
Crude Oil Prices Move Higher
Oil prices were trading higher as markets assessed the possibility of supply disruptions.
Brent crude futures gained 84 cents, or 0.84%, to $101.42 per barrel, while US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures rose 65 cents, or 0.73%, to $90.09 per barrel, according to the figures cited in the report.
One factor supporting oil prices was a developing storm in the Gulf of Mexico. US forecasters said the storm could become the first Atlantic hurricane of 2026 and potentially affect oil and gas production facilities in the region.
The offshore areas in the storm’s expected path account for around 15% of US crude oil production and 5% of US natural gas output, making the weather development important for energy markets.
Geopolitical Tensions Remain in Focus
Geopolitical developments in West Asia also continued to influence the oil market. Markets were assessing reports involving attacks by Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthis on Saudi Arabia, alongside changing expectations around crude supplies from the region.
At the same time, tensions between the US and Iran remained elevated. US President Donald Trump also commented on the political situation in Iran following the prolonged US-Israeli conflict with the country.
What Should Investors Watch?
For investors tracking CPCL, MRPL and other refinery stocks, the key factors to monitor include:
- Global crude oil prices
- Gross refining margins (GRMs)
- Refinery utilisation levels
- Petrol and diesel demand
- Geopolitical developments
- Supply disruptions
- Quarterly earnings and management commentary
The rise in CPCL and MRPL Share Price highlights how quickly energy stocks can respond to changes in the global crude oil market. Investors should not base an investment decision only on a single day’s price movement or a brokerage target. It is important to consider company fundamentals, valuation, earnings outlook and personal risk before investing.
